Dr. Alex Smithers is outstanding…a talented Dr. Who is extremely passionate about healing as well as the skills involved in rejuvenative therapies. I go to him for ozone (prolozone) and dextrose (prolotherapy) injections. Have gone to him already at least 8 times. He uses ultrasound to diagnose and monitor and his injections really work. Best of all he’s a great guy and very easy to chat with.
I had been suffering from chronic neck and shoulder pain for almost 2 decades. I tried chiropractic and acupuncture, which didn’t do anything for my pain. Using essential oils and CBD would help, but that was a temporary fix. Through an online documentary, I found this clinic in Sarasota. Meeting Dr. Smithers was the best thing that ever happened to me. He’s not just a very competent doctor, he’s also very compassionate and patient. He’s extremely knowledgeable and well read,... I had my second appointment with Dr. Alex Smithers today. I was treated for painful arthritic hip, back, and neck. After treatments I felt immediate results. I was able to go shopping with my daughter with no pain which wouldn’t have been possible before without considerable pain. I am very thankful to my daughter who found Dr. Alex and this office. I am also very thankful to Dr. Alex. I have flown twice from Pa. To see him and will... Read more »

I was told i needed surgery and that i should file for social security disability… I thought my life was over . Thanks to Dr Smithers i didn’t have to do either.. I will be eternally grateful… I’m back at work and looking forward to a bright future..
Dr Smithers is so acute and atuned to what others miss. I had been suffering with abdominal issues for over 20 years getting no help from traditional medicine. He found and correctly treated the issue. Words cannot describe the quality of life that has been restored to me. He’s very caring and takes the time to listen.
I would highly recommend Dr. A. Smithers if you are considering an alternative to orthopedic surgery. My shoulder has been in pain for months and after finding out I have some rotor cuff tears, I decided to pursue Prolotherapy with Dr. A. Smithers. The result so far has been outstanding! The first night after the shots was still painful, but woke up the next morning and pain was almost completely gone. I was equally impressed with his attentiveness to answering... I was tired of going to doctors that didn’t listen to me and would just prescribe a pill not ever trying to get to the real issues I was having. Zelestrocel Stem Cell Therapy for Osteoarthritis Moves Toward Phase III
Magellan Stem Cells, an Australian biotech, has partnered with Charles River Laboratories to support the next stage of Zelestrocel, an off-the-shelf allogeneic stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis. The company has completed Phase I/II studies and is preparing a pivotal Phase III program.

What Happened
The partnership was announced in mid-October 2026. Under the agreement, Charles River Laboratories will provide cGMP next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based viral safety testing for Zelestrocel. The testing supports quality control and release under cGMP standards and is meant to prepare the product for regulatory review. Charles River expanded its sequencing capabilities through its acquisition of Pathoquest. Magellan’s COO said the approach supports both product quality and regulatory readiness as the company moves toward commercialization.
What Zelestrocel Is
Zelestrocel is an allogeneic, “off-the-shelf” stem cell therapy, meaning it is made from donor cells rather than from each patient’s own tissue. It is designed to treat osteoarthritis, and Magellan’s published research focuses on knee osteoarthritis. The off-the-shelf model avoids a tissue harvest for each patient and allows standardized, batch-based manufacturing. That standardization is also why rigorous viral safety testing matters.
Where the Program Stands
Magellan reports that it has completed Phase I/II trials. Results from its Phase I/IIa randomized controlled trial were published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage Open. The Australian government awarded a $7 million grant toward the Phase III trial, and the company says that trial is expected to begin later in 2026. Magellan has also obtained GMP certification from Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for its Melbourne production site. None of the sources reviewed describe an FDA designation or US trial for Zelestrocel, so it should be treated as an investigational therapy whose US path has not been announced.
Why This Matters
Osteoarthritis is a leading reason patients look for non-surgical regenerative options, because current treatments mainly manage symptoms. Stem cell products are widely marketed for joint pain, but few have the late-stage, regulator-ready evidence behind them. Zelestrocel’s progress is a useful benchmark for what that evidence looks like: a published randomized Phase I/IIa trial, a standardized donor-cell product, GMP manufacturing, and virus testing built for regulatory review. For practitioners and patients in integrative and regenerative medicine, it is a reminder to separate clinic-offered cell injections from products going through formal trials.
Conclusion
This is a preparation milestone, not a clinical result, and there is no efficacy news here. It still shows a stem cell osteoarthritis therapy moving from early trials toward a pivotal study. The Phase III design and any US regulatory plans will be the next things to watch.
